The Heart Sutra is one of the shortest and most recited texts in Mahayana Buddhism. In it, Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, explains to the disciple Shariputra that nothing exists on its own, apart from everything else. The best-known Chinese translation, made by the monk Xuanzang in the 7th century, runs to about 260 characters. That brevity is why the whole sutra, or its key lines, fits around a ring or a cuff.
"Form is emptiness, emptiness is form"
The sutra's most quoted line is form is emptiness, emptiness is form (色即是空,空即是色). Emptiness here does not mean nothing. It means that every thing, from a cup to a feeling to a self, arises from causes and conditions and has no fixed nature of its own. Seeing this clearly is the wisdom the sutra calls prajnaparamita, the perfection of wisdom. Its full Sanskrit title, Prajnaparamita Hridaya, means "the heart of the perfection of wisdom."
The mantra at the end
The sutra closes with a mantra:
Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha
It is usually translated as "Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone completely beyond, awakening, so be it." In Chinese it is 揭谛揭谛,波罗揭谛,波罗僧揭谛,菩提萨婆诃.
Why people wear it
In Chinese Buddhism the Heart Sutra is chanted daily in temples and copied by hand as a practice. Wearing it engraved on a ring or bracelet keeps the text close through the day. People wear it as a reminder of the teaching, as a blessing, or as a gift for someone going through a hard time.
How to wear a Heart Sutra ring
There is no fixed rule about hand or finger. Adjustable open rings fit most fingers, so you can move one from the index finger to the thumb as you like.
